Five Secrets Your Dry Cleaner Won't Tell You
With all the parties and events that happen around the holidays, you'll probably be making at least one extra trip to the dry cleaners. But if you want to avoid the expense, here's a list from "Cosmo" of five secrets your dry cleaner doesn't want you to know . . .
1) Most Clothes Don't Need to be Dry-Cleaned. If it's made of cotton and it's one color, dry-cleaning is a waste of money. But if you're not sure, try this: Wet a q-tip and dab it on a part of the clothing no one will see, like under the armpit of a shirt, or inside the waistband of a pair of pants. If any color comes off on the q-tip, the clothing should be dry-cleaned.
2) If They Don't Offer a Deal for New Customers, You Should Ask for One. Dry cleaners want repeat customers, and some are willing to give a 10 to 20 percent discount to get them. All you have to do is ask. But it only works at small, family-owned dry cleaners. Don't expect a deal if the person you ask makes minimum wage.
3) You Can Get a Better Deal In January and February. Between New Year's Eve and Valentine's Day, there aren't any major holidays people dress up for. So some dry cleaners offer 20 to 30 percent discounts to bring in more business. And if yours doesn’t, tell them you'll have a bunch of extra stuff cleaned if they give you one.
4) There's No Such Thing as "Organic" Dry Cleaning. There aren't any government standards for green dry cleaning yet. And most cleaners who offer "organic" services use hydrocarbon, which is technically organic because it comes from the earth. But in reality, it's only slightly less toxic than the regular stuff.
5) The Plastic They Use Can Ruin Your Clothing. The plastic covers they return your clothes in are made of polyethylene, which starts to break down as soon as light hits it. And it can make the colors on your clothing fade. So when you get them home, take the plastic off everything before you hang it in the closet.

Terence Trent D’arby’s Introducing the Hardling… was one of the most promising debut albums ever recorded. I was totally blown away by it when it came out, especially this track. The vocal on it is just mind blowing. No one was singing like that in the late 80s… Just listen to that last note that he hits that goes on and on. Such a shame that he faded into obscurity afterwards.

Speaking of obscure, this is one of my personal favorite covers, of the George Harrison classic. I guess you can say the ORIGINAL is kind of a cover since it is a complete rip off of the Chiffons “He’s So Fine”… but regardless, I love this moody version of it… Especially that gurgling guitar sound. His voice just pierces you on this.

Like so many of the songs on this list, this cover was so good, that it became more famous and synonymous with the artist than the original. As a child of the 80s, this of course is a classic. I used to be fascinated as a child by the video. Not only was the singer beyond gorgeous, but you got a chance to see what kind of instruments the band was playing, I remember thinking the bass guitar the guy played was particularly cool looking.

You know you’ve got something when you can take a BEATLES song and better it. The way Joe Cocker and his Grease Band deconstructed this tune was pehenomenal. They totally made it their own. Now famous for being the title tune of the show “The Wonder Years” which is kind of a drag because it removes some of the original power of it, it still remains an iconic recording of the era.

Practically unrecognizable from the original, this is one of the many signature songs of the all too brief career of the great Jimi Hendrix. He shows himself to be not only a grenius songwriter and musician, but a master interpreter of other peoples material as well. He took a kind of a rave up 60sy tune and made something menacing, searing and timeless.

Joan Jett could cover a song like nobodies business. Pretty much a note for note rendering of the original, what she added was the BALLS… This version is much thicker and heavier and she sang it with way more conviction. The Blackhearts had a great fucking sound… the solo is much better as well.

The Byrds are another band that knew how to cover a song and make it their own. This classic Roger Mcguinn opening riff is one of the great riffs of all time. It was such a good cover that after they recorded it, Pete Seeger sang THEIR version in concerts ever afterward.

Nilsson actually recorded TWO versions of this song. One in 1967 and this more famous version in 1969, which was included in the classic movie Midnight Cowboy and became a huge smash hit for him. I love this version above all others. I also love the original artist as well, Fred Neil… one of the great underrated geniuses of the 60s.

Original Recording: Nine Inch NailsOne of legend Johnny Cash’s last recordings, and one of his greatest. He turns a distinctly 90s angsty tune into a timeless classic. The video is heartbreaking as well. One of the great recordings of the last decade… and all time for that matter

Not a huge fan of Rod Stewart generally, but he totally nailed this one. Just a tremendous track. For a man who made a career of covering other people’s songs and doing very well at it… this is his greatest cover.

With this recording Van Halen achieved a near impossible feat. They made a hugely famous single (one of the biggest of the 60s) their OWN so that whenever you hear it you can only think of David Lee Roths squeaks and screams and Eddie’s guitar. Later on Roth did the same with the Beach Boys’ California Girls… Unfortunately RUINING that one…

A song so good that it was recorded by two different artists (the composer Carole King) and James Taylor in the same year and BOTH VERSIONS got grammies for it. Not only that but Taylor played on King’s version as well! A brilliant piece of songwriting.

Majik Most – Molesting Hiphop – Yo, I know it’s street to act like you’re a hardened criminal, but somehow I don’t think “child molester” is really what you want to shoot for. Especially with your snorkel and barely-past-puberty facial hair. Bonus points for the completely inappropriate Ernie and Bert cameo.
A.P.9 – The Grinch – The Photoshop quality on this one is better than normal, but it keeps you asking the question: is Jim Carrey’s Grinch really something you want to build a rap identity around? Is A.P.9. working on a Cat in the Hat mixtape next?
Top Dog – Slam Dunkin’ Hoes – I love the ones that are just super literal. Your album’s called Slam Dunkin’ Hoes? Let’s just put your ass on the cover slam dunking a hoe. No, you don’t actually have to do it, they have this thing called Photoshop and I can just – aw, let me just show you. And then Top Dog was all like “PERFECT!”
Spank Rock And Benny Blanco - Bangers And Cash – Okay, it’s one thing to pay tribute to 2 Live Crew’s classic As Nasty As They Wanna Be. It’s quite another to put cellulite that nasty on full display. Damn, girl, take some sandpaper to that mess.
South Coast Shorty – The Hot Girl – Seriously? I’d hate to see the ugly girl, if that’s the hot one.
Baby aka #1 Stunna – Birdman – Photoshop is a hell of a tool, man. Do you think they nerds at Adobe in like 1990 when they first released Photoshop 1.0 had any idea that twenty years later people would be using it to create deformed rapper/bird hybrids?
1st Famm – Best Kept Secret – You know, as phony as this dude’s Terminator 2 liquid metal face mask job is, you’ve got to give him props for hiring identical twin bodyguards to protect his pile of gold bars. Oh wait.
Mystikal – Unpredictable – We all know that Mystikal is batcrap crazy anyhow, but this cover really drives the message home. I’M AN EXPLODING JIGSAW PUZZLE! PREDICT THIS! YOU CAN’T!
Big Bear – Doin’ Thangs – This is such a legendary cover that any words I could say about it would be wasted. I just love that instead of the typical pile of bling, we have nuts and berries. This guy lives the gimmick.
M$ Tee – Havin’ Thing$ – Yes, having your grandma’s things. I wouldn’t really brag about that living room set.
Iceberg – Gangsta Rap – Yeah, but if you put a huge gilded frame around it, it’ll be classy. No matter that if you peek you can actually see his ho’s vajayajy.
Sweet P – I Toast Myself – The ontological implications of this image are astonishing. Jesus turned water into wine, but Sweet P can apparently turn cognac into his body and then back into cognac. And then, in theory, he will alco-bang the girl in the ill-fitting denim bikini who got his name tattooed on her titty.
Da Brat – Da Brat – There’s two possible explanations here. One is Photoshop. The other one is that Da Brat actually got a custom painted leotard with images of herself on it. I am pulling so hard for #2 it’s not even funny.
